If you're staying in El Poblado for the Airbnbs, don't spend your whole trip in the neighborhood. Two excursions round out a Medellín trip better than anything else on offer: a full day out to Guatapé's reservoir and rock, and a half-day inside the city at Comuna 13, once its most dangerous neighborhood and now its most compelling comeback story.
Guatapé: the full-day trip
Two hours outside Medellín, Guatapé is a lakeside town covered in colorful painted zócalos, best known for El Peñol — a 200-meter granite rock with 740 steps to a viewpoint over the reservoir. A guided day trip handles the drive, includes a boat cruise on the reservoir, and gets you back to Medellín by evening.
Comuna 13: the half-day inside the city
Comuna 13 was, within living memory, one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world. It's now a symbol of the city's transformation — covered in murals, connected by outdoor escalators and a cable car, and genuinely worth the half-day it takes to see properly with a local guide.
Medellín: Guatapé Tour, Lunch, Cruise & Piedra del Peñol
- Climb (or skip) the 740 steps of El Peñol for reservoir views
- Guided walk through Guatapé's colorful zócalo streets
- Boat cruise on the Guatapé reservoir, plus lunch
Medellín: Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour, Cable Car & Street Food
- Cable car ride up for panoramic city views
- Guided walk through Comuna 13's murals and escalators
- Colombian street food tasting along the way
Base yourselves in El Poblado or Provenza — both excursions have pickup points nearby, so you're not adding a cross-town transfer before your day even starts.
