Just two hours from Medellín, the technicolor town of Guatapé is one of Colombia's most photogenic day trips — and it's absolutely worth an overnight stay. Climb the 740 steps of La Piedra del Peñol for a panoramic view of the lake-studded countryside, wander the zócalo-decorated streets (every building has a colorful hand-painted baseboard), and rent a boat to explore the islands and inlets of the massive Peñol-Guatapé reservoir. Medellín has two dry seasons: December through March and July through August. These are the best times for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. April–May and October–November are rainier but still warm. There's no bad time to visit — the weather barely changes.
