Bali for Couples: Skip the Group Bus, Book a Private Tour

Same temples, same rice terraces, none of the 20-person bus group setting the schedule.

Tegalalang rice terraces, Ubud

Bali's classic day-trip circuit — water temple, rice terraces, jungle waterfall — gets sold to tourists almost exclusively as a shared bus tour. For a few dollars more, a private car and driver covers the same ground on your own schedule, which matters more than it sounds like it would.

The actual itinerary

The day typically opens at Tirta Empul, a holy spring temple where locals still come for purification rituals, then continues to Gunung Kawi, a set of ancient rock-cut shrines tucked into a river valley that most shared tours skip entirely. From there it's the Tegalalang rice terraces — Bali's most photographed landscape — and usually a stop at a local coffee plantation.

Why private, not shared

With a private driver, you pay only for the entrance tickets you choose and can linger wherever the light is good or skip whatever doesn't interest you. For two people, it's a small price difference for a meaningfully different day.

Couple tip: Bring a sarong, or expect to rent one at the temple entrance — most Balinese temples require covered shoulders and legs, and Tirta Empul is strict about it.

Basing yourselves in Ubud puts you closest to this whole route, so you're not adding hours of transfer time on either end.
