Queenstown is for couples who fall in love a little harder in mountains. Framed by the jagged Remarkables range and set on the mirror-still Lake Wakatipu, it's equal parts chic alpine town and adventure capital of the world. Fine-dining lodges and rustic cabins; wine tours and bungee jumps; glacier heli-rides and fireplace-lit evenings.

Summer (Dec–Feb) is golden — lakeside swimming, wine tours through Gibbston Valley, biking the Arrow River trails, hiking into Milford Sound. Winter (Jun–Aug) turns Queenstown into one of the southern hemisphere's best ski destinations — Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, or Cardrona by day; hot tub and pinot noir by night.

Either way, build in one epic day — a full-day fjord tour to Milford Sound, a heli-flight onto a glacier, a Lord of the Rings location hike. The rest of your time, go slow: a waterfront dinner at Eichardt's, a private soak at Onsen Hot Pools, a sunset drive up to Coronet Peak.

🎯

Milford Sound, the Fast Way

The classic Milford Sound day trip is a 12-hour round-trip coach ride through Fiordland. If you'd rather spend the time looking at the scenery than driving through it, a small 12-seater plane crosses the Southern Alps and the Paradise valley (used for filming both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) in about 45 minutes, then lands you right beside Mitre Peak for a 1hr 45min small-boat nature cruise past Stirling Falls and Seal Rock. Total time: about 4.5 hours.

When to go

Summer (December–February) is long, golden days and lakeside magic. Winter (June–August) is ski season and one of the most atmospheric times of year. Shoulder months (March–May, September–November) have lower prices, beautiful light, and fewer crowds.

Spend extra where the room position changes the entire feel of the trip.

Skip the busy core if privacy and quiet evenings matter more than walkable nightlife.

Line this up early when arrival simplicity matters.

Rental cars

Often worth it for countryside and coastal regions.
